Serving Breakfast and other Carpenter’s Shelter Opportunities
There are a bunch of volunteer opportunities at Carpenter’s Shelter in Alexandria.
What would you think about our community volunteering to serve breakfast one Sunday a month? It looks like they have the 1st and 4th Sundays available and we would need to be there at 8. See full post for more details and comment with your thoughts… Read more
No Great Emergence Classes Today
Considering the icy roads, we are cancelling both the 2:00 and 7:30 Great Emergence Book Discussions today.
We will meet next Wednesday, February 4th. The roads aren’t terrible, but I’d rather have us safe.
Have a wonderful day and pray for safe travels for all who really need to get out today – especially the Foster family.
Peace to all – Jan Edmiston
Phil’s Project on Display at Portrait Gallery
The last several months Phil has been working on a group of interviews of Vice Presidents to accompany an exhibit at the National Portrait Gallery.
The exhibit is now on display and a group of us, including Phil, are meeting up at the National Portrait Gallery at 11am this Saturday, January 31st to see it.
Let Phil know if you are planning to go and if you have trouble finding the group, you may call him at 650.714.5344.
Gathering at 4:30pm this Sunday (Superbowl Party afterward)
Because of the Superbowl, we’ll be meeting at 4:30pm for Holy Grounds this week. Be sure to come at 4:30 as Margie will be sharing with us more about her call to work with refugees in Jordan. We’ll spend time praying for her and commissioning her as someone called there from our community. Our friends from Fairlington United Methodist will be joining us for a Superbowl Party afterwards.
Superbowl Party
We’ll be gathering Sunday night with our friends from Fairlington United Methodist for a Superbowl Party in the Lower Level at 6pm after worship on Sunday night (it’s beginning at 4:30pm). I’ll make sure that we have hotdogs and hamburgers for all (veggie burgers as well). Please bring game/party related food and drinks (no alcohol). It should be a great evening starting with sending Margie off well and ending with a great party!
Activist D.C. Church Embraces Transition in Name of Its Mission
The Washington Post’s Michelle Boorstein recently wrote an article about Church of the Savior, Activist D.C. Church Embraces Transition in Name of Its Mission. To quote one of my friends in the city, “No other group of people has done more to bring social justice to the city.” They were emerging decades before anyone had any concept of what that meant. I have many friends in their community and I admire their work more than I can articulate. The article is an important background piece for us to have as we continue to contemplate what we are called to as a community and what that practically looks like in this season.
Congregational Meeting after Morning Worship Jan 25th
There will be a congregational meeting after morning worship on January 25th. Please make plans to attend if you can, though only members can vote, we need everyone’s input for our community to be what God has called us to.
After the meeting we will be having a luncheon in the Lower Level to continue to build relationships and community.
Holy Grounds now on Twitter
Holy Grounds is now using Twitter to help us better stay connected.
What that translates to, is that you can now get community updates via text message to your mobile phone. This comes in handy for many scenarios…
- We’re on the 2nd floor for burgers instead of the third.
- Someone in our community has an immediate and urgent prayer request.
- We’re doing an impromptu movie night and want to invite everyone.
If you are following @holygrounds via text messaging, you would receive a text notification on your phone.
Join at http://www.twitter.com/holygrounds, add your mobile phone as a device under settings, and then subscribe to Holy Grounds text updates. Some of us are using twitter personally and you will be able to connect with us this way as well.
Problem of Evil Class Sundays at 9:30am
Our friends at Fairlington United Methodist have invited us to a class on the “Problem of Evil” taking place in their parlor Sunday mornings at 9:30am. I went this last week and it was phenomenal.
Half-priced burgers at 12:30 today
The Sports Pub is having an inaugural event tonight that’s going to take over most of the restaurant, so, since it’s a holiday, we’ve decided to go early to the Crystal City Sports Pub for half-priced burgers.
Meet up at 12:30pm.
If you have any problems finding our group, send a message to Matt: 434-962-4927.
Help Needed on Saturday January 17
Hello Holy Grounds community! My family is going through a sort of crisis right now and so I am asking for help. We are trying to empty out a large building that my grandparents used to own and the task is too overwhelming for just me and my parents. I would like organize a sort of work day for this Saturday afternoon the 17th. Any help for what ever length of time would be not only physically but emotionally helpful. Here are the details:
What: a workday to help out my family
When: Saturday, Jan. 17 at 1-3pm
Where: 717 N. St. Asaph St. in Old Town Alexandria
Things to be done: *Hauling trash to the dumpster *Take remaining stuff to Salvation Army or other donation site *Ideas for unsold organs and other large items
Also, Matt thought I should mention that I do have about 40 pianos and organs that did not sell in the auction we held last weekend. If you are interested in purchasing one for cheap, let me know before tomorrow at noon to set up an appointment for bidding on one. (You can probably get one for $75-$300). Let me know if you have thoughts, questions, ideas, or comments about anything mentioned in this email. Thanks friends!
