Please be in prayer for her Dad.

DIY Funerals
Max Alexander lost his father and father-in-law within days of one another. One had a traditional funeral. For the other, they chose a less-orthodox, DIY funeral which he talks about in an article in Smithsonian Magazine. In light of our recent discussions, I thought you might find it interesting.
“I suppose people whose loved ones are missing in action or lost at sea might envy the rest of us, for whom death typically leaves a corpse, or in the polite language of funeral directors, ‘the remains,’” Alexander writes. “Yet for all our desire to possess this tangible evidence of a life once lived, we’ve become oddly squeamish about our dead… According to advocates, home after-death care is… more meaningful for the living.”

I found the article through GOOD, a great magazine about all sorts of stuff. Blog post can be found here: http://www.good.is/?p=16538
Friday Night Movie Outing – NOW AT 7PM
AMC THEATER HAS CHANGED THE START TIME TO 7 PM
Let’s all go out to the movies this Friday Night and see “The Reader”! It’s playing in Shirlington at the AMC Theater and starts at 7:15. And for those that can make it, how about dinner; 6:00 at the Thai restaurant. If you can make it to dinner, I’ll need a head count by 3:00 Friday; so I can make reservation. I would also suggest purchasing your movie ticket in advance!!!! Then there’s the option for dessert after the movie???
Justice to Others (A Day of Service for Lent)
Hi all:
So we have our time and space secured for the service project. It will be next Sunday, March 29 at Carpenter’s Shelter: 930 N Henry St, Alexandria, VA 22314
We will be serving breakfast around 8 AM, so we will need to get there rather early. We’re thinking waffles, eggs, bacon or sausage, and the regular coffee/tea/juice deal. I think if we secure the supplies on Saturday and got to the kitchen between 6:00-6:30 AM on Sunday, we should be able to whip up a breakfast worth noting.
Please let me know if you would like to join in the cooking, and/or if you would like to help by providing some of the food we need. Thanks!
Sunday Morning Conversation about Holy Grounds
The morning worship community has been having a series of Lenten conversations before worship each week. Previous ones have included Jan’s Sabbatical, Membership, and the Role of Pastors. We’ll be having a discussion on human trafficking in the U.S. in a couple of weeks.
This week we’re having a discussion about Holy Grounds. I’ll be trying to help people understand how we function as a community and who we are.
It would be much better, however, if, in the model of our community, I am not the only one sharing. That’s where you come in! Would you consider being a part of this conversation next Sunday (March 19) morning at 9:30? Let me know at matt@fpcusa.org or comment to this post if you can make it.
NCAA Tournament
I don’t know how many people would be interested, but I created a NCAA Tournament bracket group through Yahoo! Groups. It’s really easy to set up, and I thought it might be fun.
Group name is Holy Grounds
Password is holygrounds

Baked good of your choice (cupcakes, cookies fresh from my kitchen) to the winner!
Birthday Carpool
Those who live/work near 3846 King St, we’ll meet in the parking lot at about 6:30 and take me minimum number of cars necessary to Jen’s. Let me know if you’re planning to carpool so we ‘ll be on the lookout for you: 434-962-4927.
The Unnamed Concubine
I thought many of you would really enjoy listening to Jan’s sermon about The Unnamed Concubine in Judges 19 from this past Sunday morning worship gathering. Jan’s sermons are consistently great, but this one is particularly good. It’s available as an MP3.
Jan put a transcript of it on her blog as well.
Can’t wait to hear your reflections!
Learn to Sew!
Sarah Laryea, a member of Fairlington UMC, used to make clothes for a living in Ghana. She’s interested in teaching people her trade and is hosting a class this Saturday at 12PM in the Parlor at Fairlington UMC. We’ll cover some basic stuff in this class and then get to more advanced things like actually making shirts or dresses in later classes. If you’re interested please call or email Dave Moore (703.869.4441, cruguru@gmail.com)
peace,

Stations of the Cross: Resources
Let’s keep a running conversation here about thoughts/ ideas/ other stuff we come across that might be helpful:
This is what the Pope JPII recited during the Stations. Did you know, btw, that he meditated on the stations in the days before his death?
Stabat Mater is a thirteenth century Roman Catholic hymn that meditates on the suffering of Mary during the crucifixion. Here is a youtube video with the hymn beautifully sung.
BTW, does anyone have a soundtrack to the Passion movie?
Another Opportunity to Support the Stikkers
You once again wonderful opportunity to spend time with Dave Stikkers at his residence – Sunrise on Duke Street. His stay there has been extended through March 15 and we are againing looking for people to hang out with Dave.
As most of you know, Dave Stikkers is a 41 year old leader in our congregation with frontal lobe dementia. This transition has not been easy as the staff at Sunrise cannot provide 24-hour minute to minute oversight.
If you would like to spend An Evening with Dave for a 3PM-7PM or a 7PM-7AM shift sometime over the next two weeks, please contact Natalie at office@fpcusa.org.
The overnight shift involves simply sleeping in the recliner in Dave’s room and spending time with him if he awakens. The 3PM-7PM shift involves just hanging out and having dinner with him if you wish. There is no physical or medical care required at all. No administration of medication, etc. Just stay with him and make sure he isn’t disturbing the other residents.
It is a blessing and a pleasure to be able to share this time with Dave. And it will give Dave’s family and the compassionate Sunrise staff some peace of mind.
Is there a shift you would like to offer any day March 12-15?
Thanks and blessings this Lenten Season.
Stations of the Cross
Hey All,
