Giving Thanks for Little Things

On Sunday, the two Fairlingtons got together to begin a discussion of Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s Book “Life Together”. We’ll be meeting through September 6th to continue the discussion and think about how we can apply some of the things Bonhoeffer talks about (9am in the parlor at Fairlington UMC; everyone is highly encouraged to attend).
One thing that came up during the discussion was thankfulness, specifically being thankful for the small blessings that God provides for us everyday. Bonhoeffer says it like this: “Only he who gives thanks for little things receives big things. We prevent God from giving us the great spiritual gifts He has in store for us because we do not give thanks for daily gifts.“
So here’s a challenge for folks: Let’s give thanks for the little things! From now through September 6th, let’s use this space to thank God for the small blessings in our lives. When something comes upin your life, add a comment to this post. This is open to everyone, not just people who came to the bookstudy. Nothing is too mundane or too small. If you have a joy or a blessing or something makes you smile, share it with the community and give thanks to God. Everyone, let’s practice the art of thankfulness and see where it takes us.
peace and grace,

Ash was downtown today, so we got to have lunch together. Awesome!
Just read a beautiful appreciation of Eunice Kennedy Shriver (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/12/sports/12sandomir.html). I’m thankful for loving, inspirational people.
Got to pick up Joanna at the airport late last night. So happy she’s back!
Got to spend the last hour with my awesome baby boy napping in my lap.
Got a message from a friend that reminded me that even when we’re not aware, God can use us to impact people’s lives.
I had a great time celebrating Becky’s birthday last night. And I got to have some (a lot of) tiramisu!
Having the stack of papers the boss wanted right on the corner of my desk when he walked in and asked.
I’m thankful for delicious free coffee that I get every day at work! Mmmmm.
