Update on Moving

Hey guys!

Just a reminder, Lauren and I will be moving on Saturday January 2nd. If you could come and help us that would be amazing. I am hoping to make the entire thing into one load so we aren’t all driving back and forth. The official start time is 10AM but if anyone wants to come earlier I’ll be picking up the Uhaul @ 0700 and start prepping as soon as I get to my house. We will serve you guys lunch of some sort, haven’t gotten that one figured out. Anyway our address is 7020 Chadds Ford Dr, Brandywine, MD 20613. For those of you who don’t have GPS take 495 east toward Baltimore. Take the Waldorf MD exit and head south on MD-5 for 12 miles. Chadds Ford is on your right accross from Safeway and Target. If you don’t mind either give me a call or email me to let me know you are coming thanks.

Hey – I promised to get tickets to Screwtape Letters at the Lansburgh Theatre, and there were so many options, it didn’t happen.  BUT . . . there is interest from several of you to go this Saturday night.  I’ll buy the tickets if you want them.

Please email me at jan@fpcusa.org by 5:00 on New Year’s Day and I’ll order your tickets.  Tickets are $49 or $60.  Let me know which you’d like for the January 2 8pm show.

Helping Josh & Lauren move

Hi friends - I hope you all had a fabulous Christmas!  I spoke with Josh and they’re still going to try to move next weekend.  I sadly won’t be there, but I told Josh I would help rally the troops to get them moved.  Josh is renting a truck on Saturday, January 2 and want to start the process at 9 am.  If you can help, they would greatly appreciate it.  Let me know if you’re in so I can tell them how many to expect and I’ll get the address from them as well.  Thanks everyone!  Merry Christmas!

HG on the 27th……Any Ideas

Pray for Lauren

Hi friends -

I got some sad news this evening.  Please pray for our friend Lauren – her little niece passed away today.  Her niece has battled a heart condition all her life and she got an infection she couldn’t overcome.  Lauren is trying to get home tomorrow – pray she can get a flight in the midst of the chaos of the snowstorm.  And pray for her and her family.  I will let you know if there’s anything else we can be doing.  Thank you all!

Love,

Steph

Christmas Caroling Cancelled for Sunday Night!

Because there is at least a foot of snow out there with no one sure how to clear it . . .

Because Jesus loves it even when we sing in the warmth of our homes . . .

Melanie & I agree that we should cancel Christmas Caroling for Dec. 20th at 6:45 pm.  So, whip up some cocoa and stay safely home.

See you at Christmas Eve service at 7pm Dec. 24th!

Nancy’s car vandalized – Update

As you all saw in a previous post, Nancy Cady’s car was vandalized last week.  The HG community stepped up and agreed to help with the repairs.  John Dale was amazing and worked with Nancy to get the car fixed.  It was an expensive repair, however – totaling almost $1400.  John graciously covered this expensein order to get the car fixed, but many have expressed a desire to help and have been asking how.  If you are able to help with reimbursing John, please make out a check to Fairlington Presbyterian Church an write “Deacon’s Fund-Nancy Cady” in the subject line.  You can give your check (or cash) to Jon Borden or Jan and they will take care of getting John reimbursed.  If you aren’t concerned with getting a tax receipt and would prefer, you can give funds to John Dale directly.

Reminder: White Elephant Party on Saturday!

Hey all – Remember the White Elephant Christmas party is at 7 pm on Saturday.  Bring a wrapped white elephant gift, a snack to share, any games we might want to play, and any gift cards you’d like to donate to those in our community who might need a little extra help this Christmas.  Everyone is invited so feel free to invite friends or family!

Nancy’s car vandalized

Hey guys!  Our friend Nancy had a situation arise last night after HG.  When she got home last night she found that her car had been vandalized – back window & windshield smashed and tires slashed.  They only have liability insurance on the car so they have to cover the costs to get it fixed – which is expensive and simply not in their budget at the moment.  Her daughter desperately needs her car to visit her daughter in the hospital (she’s been there since birth except for short periods and is now 23 months old).

The amazing John Dale has volunteered to go over to Nancy’s tomorrow and help logistically with getting the car repaired, which is WONDERFUL.  If you can help donate to cover the costs of the repairs, it would be greatly apppreciated.  You can write a check to FPC and drop it by the church office with a note that it’s for Nancy’s car repairs or you can drop it in the offering on Sunday marked the same way.  Anything we raise over and above what Nancy needs will just go in the deacon’s fund for the next time there is a situation like this.

Thanks everyone – the way we come together in times of crisis like this makes me really love Holy Grounds and all of you.

Love, Steph

Shane Claiborne addresses those who don’t believe

Esquire asked Shane Claiborne to “address those who don’t believe”:

To all my nonbelieving, sort-of-believing, and used-to-be-believing friends: I feel like I should begin with a confession. I am sorry that so often the biggest obstacle to God has been Christians. Christians who have had so much to say with our mouths and so little to show with our lives. I am sorry that so often we have forgotten the Christ of our Christianity…

This Friday Night – Join us for Pizza at Rustico

John and I have an empty fridge in preparation for moving, so we’re forced to eat out tomorrow night. Bummer. What a great time for pizza and beer!

I’ve heard Rustico has some pretty good specialty pizza and a very wide range of unique beers, but I haven’t been yet to test them out. Here’s their site if you want a preview: http://www.rusticorestaurant.com/index.html

John and I will be there around 7 p.m. tomorrow (December 4th–is it really December already???) Email me or text me if you’d like to join us and we’ll save a seat for you!

Christmas Party Time

Our community will be gathering together to celebrate the season on Saturday, December 12th at 7:00pm in the Lower Level of FPC. Please bring a snack to share.
We’ll be having our traditional White Elephant gift exchange, so bring an inexpensive (possibly something you already own), wrapped gift to include in the festivities. Additionally, this year, we will be collecting gift cards (to anywhere, for any amount) that will be donated to families that could use some help this season. If you would like to contribute to that, please feel free :)

Advent Conspiracy

Hey Everybody, if you missed our discussion last Sunday, you missed seeing this awesome video that Jan shared from the Advent Conspiracy movement. I definitely recommend checking it out if you haven’t already seen it. It’s a fantastic way to get refocused this holiday season.

If that video’s not working, you can check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVqqj1v-ZBU.

Christmas Pageant!

IT’S NOT CHRISTMAS WITHOUT A PAGEANT!  (Okay, all we really need is Jesus but pageants are fun.)

The 11am service will produce a traditional Christmas Pageant on Sunday, Dec. 13 during 11 am worship and we are in need of:

Luke the Physician (the narrator), The PriestThe Innkeeper, and assorted “Hill People” (not the same as Capitol Hill People)

Rehearsals: This Sunday (Dec. 6) 9:30 – 10:30 am  and Next Sunday (Dec. 13) 9:30 – 10:30 am

Bonus feature:  Hanging out with little ones dressed as angels and sheep.  (And who doesn’t look good in shepherd-wear?)

Contact me if interested.  Thanks!    jan@fpcusa.org
