Hari,

I’ve finally nailed down some info about what help I could use for my move. It’s Saturday, August 6 and I can start at 8AM.

I need a couple of things:

1. Some helpers to load my U-Haul. I have an elevator reserved starting at 8AM that morning and just need to get everything out and on to the truck as quickly as possible.

2. Delivery of extra furniture to the church. It can all go on the back of the U-Haul, and we make a stop on the way to Reston. Or, someone with a pickup might be able to take it separately.

3. Two people to follow me to Reston: One to drive my car and one to follow and take that driver back to Alexandria.

I don’t actually need any help unloading or unpacking in Reston – I have soccer players and coworkers who are going to pitch in on that end. I hope to get loaded and drive out there in the morning and be done with that much by early afternoon.

IKEA Run

This past Monday afternoon at burgers a couple of folks expressed a need to go to IKEA; so I suggested and they agreed we’d make an IKEA run using my truck; which can hold up to six folks and a fair amount of stuff in the bed. So as of right now there are 3 of us going on Saturday morning 29 Jan. If you want to join us in car pooling or following in your own car, you’re all welcome and as long as we don’t exceed the capacity of the back of my truck I’ll haul your stuff back to your place. The only thing I ask, if you are going; is to let me know if you need a ride and or will need space in my truck for your stuff. Are friend Dave Moore asked me to pass this on for all who are interested. I help cook last year and can at least testify the chicken was good.

So have a little story to tell you. Early last week Jan and Hari ask if I could help set up or close up after the 4^th of July Sunday service and I agreed to close things up after the service. Then this morning just after 9am, while I was getting ready for church, I got a call from Katherine Stikkers asking for help. She was to be reading scripture during the service and staying after to pray with anyone who needs it. Well as fate would have it; little Ryan has strep throat and now she can’t make it. Chris Hatfield had already agreed to read scripture, so she was calling to ask if I could stay after the service and pray with anyone who needed it. Of course I agreed and told her I’d be praying Ryan got better and she didn’t get sick.

I arrived for the morning service just before 10 and wondered around talking with a few folks; then as the service started I quietly found a seat in the last pew; to hear the stand in pasture given a great sermon. As the service finished and folks made their way out, I made my way to the front of the sanctuary to see if anyone would come up for prayer. Just getting up from the front pew was Nancy; for reasons at the time she didn’t understand her granddaughter (Elaina) had lead her to the front of the church on this morning; so I stopped and asker how things were going. Not wanting to go into great detail here I can just tell you it was a tearful conversation for her; Nancy is a proud women. She is still trying to save her house and has a lawyer trying to help; which sounds promising. The problem is, she is about $600 short in being able to pay the lawyer to file paperwork in court this coming Thursday. It turns out she had the money but lost it to a family member she thought she could trust.

I don’t tell this story to ask for money; that I guaranteed her she would have by Wednesday night. I tell this story as a witness to how God works in our lives. When Jan first emailed and asked for help I wasn’t inclined to help, and then Hari called and left me a message; I knew it was something I should do. The phone call from Katherine to ask if I would stand in for her at the last minute; which was a no brainer too say yes to; and to be honest I knew the likely hood of anyone coming up front was very slim. (Very selfish thinking on my part I know.) Nancy and Elaina usually sit somewhere in the middle of the sanctuary, but today Elaina lead Nancy to the very front. So as it turns out I was the one to come forward; to be humbled by the plight of Nancy and her strength to keep moving forward. To be reminded of all the gifts God has given me and that they are not mine to keep, but to be shared with those in need.

I pray we all recognize the gifts the Lord has given us and are hearts are open to all.

Stephanie and I are going to see Tim McGraw with special guest Lady Antebellum and Love and Theft Tickets, Saturday July 10^th at Jiffy Lube Live. The concert starts at 7pm, but we if get down there by 5pm we can tailgate/picnic; then head in for the great music and a great time!

Lawn tickets are on sale for $41.85 each (ticket and associated fees) and can be purchased at Livenation.com.

CARPENTER’S COOK-OFF VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

The Carpenter’s Shelter is starting the process of looking for volunteers to support their 8^th Annual Cook-Off; to be held Saturday 25 April 2010. This family friendly event will generate funds in support of their Transitional Services program, benefitting formerly homeless children and families. I look at this as a great way to personally support the community and ask for you to join me in volunteering. I have already contacted their volunteer coordinator and have listed the “TENTATIVE” list of volunteers need below; the actual list is due out shortly. My goal is to recruit as many volunteers as I can from the Fairlington Presbyterian Church Community (HG and morning service) and possibly some of our Methodist friends and present us a group of volunteers. Please review the list and if you feel so moved to volunteer for one of the many positions need, I ask that you contact me ASAP and mark the date on your calendar. JonBorden@msn.com

St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Old Town Alexandria

Ok! So we’ve been bottled in with Snow, Snow and more Snow, and a little bout with cold rainy days… It’s now time to get out and enjoy what should be a mild sunny Saturday and here’s what I’m thinking!

“The St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Old Town Alexandria on March 6, 2010 kicks off the holiday. The event includes a dog show with judging for everything from the smallest dog to the dog and master who look most alike. The parade begins at 12:30 p.m. with the best bagpipers around. Details – There is a Classic Car Show at 10am and the dog show is at 10:30. What I’m thinking about, is getting down there by 11:30 and finding a place to hang out, watch the parade, enjoy the sun, then grab lunch!

Hi Folks – So we’ve broached the subject many of times and now it’s time to move forward with some action. On the 17^th planning meeting we have time slotted to have a formal discussion and I thought I’d throw out some topics for you to chew on, like; Paying Rent for the time we spend using the Lower Level of the Church? Use of the word Tithing? Supporting Joanna and Margie in their missions? Supporting your own charity or picking one to support? Thoughts on Holy Grounds having a line item in the church budget we fund? The discussion is open to all and all are invited to attend and participate.

Nancy’s car vandalized – Update

As you all saw in a previous post, Nancy Cady’s car was vandalized last week. The HG community stepped up and agreed to help with the repairs. John Dale was amazing and worked with Nancy to get the car fixed. It was an expensive repair, however – totaling almost $1400. John graciously covered this expensein order to get the car fixed, but many have expressed a desire to help and have been asking how. If you are able to help with reimbursing John, please make out a check to Fairlington Presbyterian Church an write “Deacon’s Fund-Nancy Cady” in the subject line. You can give your check (or cash) to Jon Borden or Jan and they will take care of getting John reimbursed. If you aren’t concerned with getting a tax receipt and would prefer, you can give funds to John Dale directly.

Saturday Afternoon Movie and Dinner!

Last Sunday at HG Jan mentioned a movie called “Precious” that many may never consider seeing. So I’m asking all to consider joining Jan in seeing this movie on Saturday. The plan is to meet at the Regal Potomac Yard Theater for the 3:45 showing; then heading some place for dinner and to talk about the movie. (The location for dinner is up in the air and all suggestions are welcome!)

“Precious” is about an overweight, illiterate African-American teen from Harlem who discovers an alternate path in life after she begins attending a new school. Clareece “Precious” Jones is only a teenager, yet she’s about to give birth to her second child. Unable to read or write, Clareece shows little prospect for the future until discovering that she has been accepted into an alternative school. There, with a little help from a sympathetic teacher (Paula Patton) and a kindly nurse (Lenny Kravitiz), the young girl receives something that most teens never get — a chance to start over. “Precious” an inspirational drama!

The Plan – To meet up at Galae Thai Restaurant, 215 Swamp Fox Road, grab dinner and then walk around the corner to the AMC Theater to watch a movie about an outwardly angelic little girl who displays an unforeseen devilish streak upon moving into the home of her new adoptive parents.

I won’t have the exact time for gathering until after the movie time is posted on Wednesday, but I suspect it will be dinner around 5:30ish and the movie about 7ish; I’ll update this post once I know the times.

CAR POOLING TO THE MENS RETREAT!

I’ve had some inquires about folks car pooling to the men’s retreat this weekend. If you are interested please let me know by Thursday evening; If you can you drive or prefer to be a passenger? If you want to drive how many men can you accommodate?

The plan would be to meet in the parking lot of the Church between 7:45 and 7:55 so you can be on the road by 8:00.

Matt and I will be going up Friday evening to set things up and look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday.

Come join your neighbors and friends Sunday for Lunch at the “Taste of Arlington”! We will be gathering at Fairlington Presbyterian Church, at 12:45 to head over as a group or let us know you are going and we can meet you there. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased there.

Taste of Arlington® is an annual event that transforms the Ballston area into a lively street festival, complete with noteworthy restaurants, live entertainment and children’s activities. Attended by over 10,000 people each year, it is the largest single day event in Arlington. Proceeds of the event benefit Community Residences, a local non-profit organization that assists people with disabilities to live independently in the community.
The 2009 Taste of Arlington® will provid a deeper flavor of Arlington, showcasing the county’s urban villages such as Ballston, Clarendon, Columbia Pike, Rosslyn, Shirlington, Crystal City and Pentagon City. Over 40 restaurants will participate.
The event is hosted by the Ballston-Virginia Square Partnership, in partnership with the Clarendon Alliance, Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization, Rosslyn Renaissance and the National Science Foundation.

“The Starfish and the Spider”
Starting in two weeks—Sunday, May 17th at 9:30am
The “Sunday Morning Conversation Series” is a way for our community to discuss, converse, and grapple with how to best love God, one another, and our neighbors in the 21st Century.
For four weeks, beginning Sunday, May 17th and running until Sunday, June 7th, we will be tackling the recently published influential business and organizational theory book, The Starfish and the Spider: The Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations. This book has been described as “a must read” and “a breezy and entertaining look at how decentralization is changing many organizations.”
The book is available for purchase for $10 in the Cowsert Parlor.
Sunday, May 17th, we will be discussing the Introduction and Chapters 1 and 2 (the first 56 pages). However, we will give a brief overview of each week’s reading so all are welcome to these conversations, even if you have not already read the section

Carpenter’s Cook-off

This Sunday, April 26th, a group of us will be supporting the Carpenter’s Shelter by attending their annual Cook-off featuring 24 restaurants and great entertainment. The Carpenter’s Shelter provides homeless families in Alexandria temporary housing.

Everything gets rolling at noon (those of us coming from the morning worship gathering will be later) with live entertainment starting at 1:30pm at The Birchmere (3901 Mount Vernon Ave).

Tickets are available at the door for $40 per adult, $5 per child (ages 6-17), and free for kids 5 and under. Tickets are available in advance for $35 for adults by calling 703.548.7500.

AMC THEATER HAS CHANGED THE START TIME TO 7 PM

Let’s all go out to the movies this Friday Night and see “The Reader”! It’s playing in Shirlington at the AMC Theater and starts at 7:15. And for those that can make it, how about dinner; 6:00 at the Thai restaurant. If you can make it to dinner, I’ll need a head count by 3:00 Friday; so I can make reservation. I would also suggest purchasing your movie ticket in advance!!!! Then there’s the option for dessert after the movie???

Margie in Jordan, Chapter 1 (Wahid)

Greetings to my friends at Holy Grounds! I am starting my third week here in Amman, Jordan and I know this is my place in this world (not a reference to Micheal W. Smith) for the time being. I am still living with my contact/host/boss which was really great the first weekend, okay for the first week, annoying the second week, and I’m scared of what this week brings. I thought I had an apartment lined up, but the landlord changed their asking price at the last minute. I’m trying not to be discouraged, as I’m not homeless and am saving a lot of money by living with Njoud, but I literally have to follow her around all the time. I do have two possibilities (one of which is living in my work’s basement) so please keep this situation in your prayers. I am so ready to talk to people, walk the streets, buy food, and explore ministry and Arabic lesson possibilities.

My work at PTEE is going well. The tasks I’ve been given thus far are very easy and I feel like I did them well. I hope that they will move me past administrative stuff and give me some grant writing and program planning experience, but it may be a couple months. I love the organization’s goal, and my coworkers are fantastic. About five are Jordanian, two are American (but lived here about 30 years), one Australian, and one woman who grew up here but has American citizenship.

The slow introduction to Jordan has allowed me to really think about what God has called me to here. Am I supposed to live in the outskirts of the city with the poor? Am I supposed to have community be a first priority? What life changes do I need to make to live appropriately? Do I make good friends with the other expats or do I keep my distance? Is earning money so I can stay, volunteering, learning Arabic, or something else my goal during this time?

I’ve had a lot of time to read, pray, keep in touch with my family, work out, and sleep. So besides a one night rebellion of the stomach last week, I feel great.

Thanks for all your prayers, I’ve been praying for you all too, and feel nostalgic when I see great events going on! Love to you all,
