So here’s the deal. I poked around on the King’s Dominion website and it looks like they do have single day tickets for $32. Since the price I was getting was only 3 dollars less most people have opted to get their own tickets because it is just easier for everyone. So if you want to go with us on Monday you should either get your tickets from their website or at a ticket stand the day of. If that is an issue for anyone let me know so we can work something out. This will also allow people to join us at the last minute. If you do decide sometime this weekend that you want to go and meet us there just give me a call on my cell @ 318 5473489 so we know to be looking for you. I’ll have my cell on me that day so people can contact me for meet up locations and that sort of thing. Oh and for those of you who want to know we have 6 people going @ this point. Looking forward to seeing you all then.

Update on King’s Dominion

So here’s the deal on tickets. I can get single day tickets for $30. If you go through King’s Dominion website they are $55.99 but they are good for any two days this season. If you want me to get your tickets I need to know by Thursday so I can get them Friday. You can just repay me on Labor Day. Thanks guys.

Baptism, BBQ & Birthday: Who needs more?

Joanna has decided to become baptized this weekend, before leaving the U.S. again for more international adventures! If you would like to be a part of this wonderful event, please meet at our house (John and Sarah Dale’s) at 4:30 p.m. this upcoming Sunday, before the Holy Grounds BBQ.

Everyone will gather at our place in Old Town, then walk down to the river where Jan will baptize Joanna in the refreshing waters of the Potomac. Afterward, the group will walk back to the house, and spend the evening celebrating with good food, drinks and conversations. Please come early to support Joanna in this wonderful decision she is making. If you can’t make it until later, stop by whenever you can; we’ll be partying all night! (or until the food/drinks run out).

And this just in…. Sunday is Jon Borden’s birthday!! Even though he might be the type who doesn’t want to be the center of attention, he’s going to have to suffer through it as we take this time to celebrate his birthday as well (Jon, blame Steph, she provided me with the intel). Who knows… there may even be singing involved…

Labor Day @ King’s Dominion

So Lauren and I were going to go to King’s Dominion for Labor Day if anybody wants to join us. Park opens @ 10:30. We are going to leave from our house in MD and travel route 301 to avoid some of the Labor Day traffic. You are more than welcome to Caravan with us or meet us there. We will probably leave the park around 3-4 in the afternoon so we can come back and take care of our puppies but you are welcome to stay later if you’d like. The tickets if purchased on the King’s Dominion website are $55.99 but they are good for any two days this season. I’m going to check @ the MWR at Andrews AFB this week to see if there are any better prices to be had. I’ll repost when I have more info on that but I will need to get the tickets on Thursday so I will need money by Wed if you want me to get your tickets through the MWR. I need a count of people who are interested in me getting tickets for them. So for that and any questions email me @ wllmsjv@gmail.com

Farewell Party for Kim

As you all know, our dear Kim is leaving us to head to Yale very soon. To ease our depression about it, I’ve decided to hold a farewell party for her at my place on Saturday evening (August 15) at 7 pm. Everyone is welcome, but please let me know if you can join us.

Holy Grounds Planning Meeting

One more announcement – we need to hold another planning meeting to figure out what we want to focus on following our redemption theme. I’d like to do it the same way we did last time, meeting prior to HG on Sunday evening. Let’s meet at 4:30 pm on Sunday, August 16 in the basement. We’ll talk about our next emphasis and hopefully spend some more time talking about where we’d like our mission focus to go.

Shenandoah Trip Details, Please RSVP

We are so excited about Saturday’s trip down the Shenandoah! It’s going to be a blast.

People will be meeting at Fairlington Presbyterian’s parking lot at noon to carpool out to Mike & Toby Gress’s house in Bluemont, VA (33868 Snickersville Turnpike). We’ll have canoes/inner-tubes available for everyone. Pack a lunch to eat on the way, we’ll have a cookout for dinner. If you would like to come out earlier, please feel free (I will be heading out Friday night so that everything’s in order when everyone arrives).

Some folks are planning to camp Saturday night. If that’s something you’re interested in, let me know.

Everyone should bring:
$5 for the cookout
Shoes to wear while in the river
Clothes/swimsuit to wear in the river
Change of clothes
Towel
If you have any life-jackets, please bring those as well (we’ll have some there also.)

Optionally bring:
Sunscreen
Bug Spray
Inner-tube(s)
Kayak, etc.
Tent/other camping supplies to spend the night
Something to contribute to the cookout
Alcohol (to be consumed in moderation at the cookout)

The Plan – To meet up at Galae Thai Restaurant, 215 Swamp Fox Road, grab dinner and then walk around the corner to the AMC Theater to watch a movie about an outwardly angelic little girl who displays an unforeseen devilish streak upon moving into the home of her new adoptive parents.

I won’t have the exact time for gathering until after the movie time is posted on Wednesday, but I suspect it will be dinner around 5:30ish and the movie about 7ish; I’ll update this post once I know the times.

Seven Deadly Sins Wednesday Night at 10

The Lent before last, Jan preached a sermon series on the Seven Deadly Sins. Tomorrow night at 10 (and the 24th at 8pm and 26th at 2pm) the Capital Fringe Festival is presenting “The Sin Show” at Mt. Vernon Place United Methodist (900 Massachusetts Ave NW). It features “storytellers taking on one of the Seven Deadly Sins for true first-person tales about facing temptation.”

I got a call from a friend about going tomorrow night. I’m not really sure what to expect, but think it could be interesting. Anyone want to come along? Tickets are $15. Text me at 434-962-4927.

We’ll carpool from the church parking lot at noon and head out to Bluemont, VA to spend the afternoon floating down the Shenandoah in canoes and inner-tubes. Pack a lunch and bring $5 for the cook-out we’ll have in Bluemont after we’re done on the river.

It’s sure to be a fun day out in the country!

HG Planning Meeting (and schedule for July)

Hey friends! Couple things upcoming for Holy Grounds…

First, here is the schedule for the month of July:
July 5 – Church History: Redeeming our common history (Phil/Lauren)
July 12 – Forgiveness & Letting Go: Redeeming our relationships (Lisa)
July 19 – Peacemaking: Redeeming our relationships – Jessi? (Matt, please confirm with her)
July 26 – Church History: Redeeming our common history Part 2 (Phil/Lauren)

Second, it’s time for our second planning meeting of the summer. I thought it worked out pretty well last time so I’m thinking we’ll go with the same plan. The next planning meeting, therefore, will be SUNDAY, JULY 12 at 4:30 pm. At the moment, I’m thinking we should talk about whether or not we want some kind of liturgy for HG (for example, some kind of prayer routine, always doing music, including some kind of small group element, having a more contemplative focus from time to time, etc). There’s also been some discussion about Holy Grounds needing to incorporate some sort of service element/outward focus. I think it would be good to start that conversation as well.

If you have other things you’d rather discuss, let me know – I’m definitely open to suggestion. If you can’t make it but have thoughts to contribute, feel free to e-mail me!

Don’t have plans on July 4? I’ll be on the D.C. Metropolitan Police Harbor Patrol Unit’s pier, located at 550 Water Street, SW (Southwest Waterfront, next to the dock for the Odyssey and Spirit of Washington). The families of the police officers and firefighters stationed there throw a mean barbecue, which will be followed up by the fireworks around 9 p.m. (there’s a great view of the Washington Monument from the pier). I’ll probably be there around 6 p.m., and I’d love for any of my Holy Grounds friends to join me!

The officers have the meat catered (pulled pork and chicken, usually), so if you think you might attend, please let me know via email. The rest of the meal is potluck, so you’re welcome to bring a dish to pass. If you don’t, that’s okay, too. Trust me, there’s always plenty of food.

Also, let me know if you’re interested in carpooling. If you’re a Metro rider, the Waterfront-SEU station is about a 5-minute walk.

FPC Yard Sale and Bake Sale

We’re seeking donations! If you have DVD’s, Video Games, Books or other items that you would like to donate please drop them off by Friday evening. You can leave items in the baby nursery across the hall from the Computer Core offices (look for the yellow sign on the door.) Finish Painters Needed

Reminder: Holy Grounds Planning Meeting

Just a reminder that we’re holding a planning meeting on Sunday at 4:30 pm to talk about the focus for the summer and a schedule around dinner. Details below! Thanks all!

I’ve been talking to a handful of you about pulling together some time to talk about what we want Holy Grounds to look like moving forward. I’ve volunteered to pull together a few meetings (I’m thinking once a month for the summer) to talk about some specific things we need to make decisions on.

I would like to do the first of these meetings on Sunday, June 7 from 4:30 – 5:30 pm. Here are the things I’d like to get your input/feedback on and I thought it might be helpful if you could think about it ahead of time. If you have thoughts you’d like to contribute to the discussion, but can’t make the meeting, feel free to shoot me an email (sreinitz@hotmail.com).

There are two agenda items:
1. Schedule & dinner plans – There are some of us who think it would be helpful to have a slightly more concrete start and end time for worship on Sunday evenings, in order to be respectful of people’s time and allow those with children and other responsibilities to plan accordingly and join us. We want to do this in a way, however, that doesn’t jeopardize our community-building focus or keep us from engaging with what the Spirit may be leading us to do in a given evening. It has also been suggested that we do dinner together at Holy Grounds instead of going out afterwards. This is a less expensive option but still allows us to eat with one another. The question is how and when to do it – before or after worship, changing worship time to incorporate this, etc. I’d love to know what different people think and come away with a recommendation.
2. Focus for the summer – We also need to decide what we want to focus on for the summer as a community and then decide how to divide up leading worship (similar to the grief focus we developed over Lent). If there is a topic or series of topics that you’d like to see us grapple with together, please come and let us know.

We hope to focus on several other issues in future meetings, including our relationship with the morning service community, supporting Holy Grounds financially, possibly incorporating a liturgy of some sort into our worship, etc. If there are other discussions you’d like to see us have, let me know and I will add it to the list. Volunteers Needed for CORE Graduation!

Computer CORE is holding its Spring 2009 Class Graduation next week on Tuesday, June 9th in Fairlington Presbyterian Church’s Fellowship Hall.

We will need ten (10) volunteers to help setting up pews, tables and chairs on Monday night, June 8th between 7pm and 9pm.

We also have a need for event assistants on the night of the graduation -June 9th – between 5:00pm and 9:00pm.

Both evenings would be a great opportunity to volunteer with friends while serving the Fairlington Community. If you are able and available to help, please send an email to Erica Landrau at erica@computercore.org.

Goodbye Dinner for Bridgett Friday at 6:30

Hey everyone! Since we are having an unconventional Sunday, I decided to accept an offer to play at an open mic night on Sunday. I would love for you all to come if you can! The event is Sunday, May 31st at 6:30 pm at the Vienna Town Green (an outdoor event). I don’t know the exact address of the green but it is on Mill street off of Maple Ave. (Maple is the main street through Vienna; rt 123). It is across from the Whole Food store and where the W&OD bike path crosses Maple Ave. I am performing about 20 minutes at approximately 7:45 pm .

In the event of “iffy” weather, I’m not sure what will happen, but feel free to have a point person call me if so. I should know the plan by 5 PM.

Holy Grounds Pentecost Worship This Sunday at 11am

This Sunday we will gather with the morning worship community for a joint celebration of Pentecost out on the lawn in front of the building at 11am. It will include elements from both our communities and be a great opportunity for us to connect with one another. After worship, we will be having a cookout together. It’s going to be a lot of fun!

We won’t be having our normal Sunday evening gathering, but stay tuned as there may be alternative options.

Holy Grounds this Sunday: On the Mall!!

Holy Grounds Community,

We have decided that since it’s Memorial Day weekend, we should do something as a group to enjoy the holiday together. We are going to attend the free concert at the National Mall on Sunday instead of our traditional service. Please see the following information:

This Sunday evening = FREE Memorial Day Concert on the West Lawn of the Capitol. There will be actors and artists entertaining. The co-hosts are Gary Sinise and Joe Mantegna. Artists playing include Trace Adkins, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Colm Wilkinson, Denyce Graves, Lang Lang, and Robert McDuffie. The National Symphony will be playing as well.

They open the gates at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday – but the concert doesn’t kick off until 8:00. From the pictures on the web site (www.pbs.org/memorialdayconcert/) it looks like there are a bunch of chairs set up and then the rest of the people sit on the lawn. I wouldn’t mind setting up some blankets on the lawn and chillin’ with some potluck picnic grub for dinner.

Feel free to get to the Mall whenever you would like. We will officially MEET as a group at the top of the Capitol South Metro stop outside at 6:00 PM. We will head over to the Mall at 6:15 PM to find a place to sit. Please bring picnic stuff and we can have a wonderful time communing and having our usual discussions until the kickoff at 8:00.

CAR POOLING TO THE MENS RETREAT!

I’ve had some inquires about folks car pooling to the men’s retreat this weekend. If you are interested please let me know by Thursday evening; If you can you drive or prefer to be a passenger? If you want to drive how many men can you accommodate?

Final Spring Work Day

We’ve made great progress this spring in updating our building and grounds. But there are still a few more projects & a portion of our property that are in need of repair and updating to fully utilize our property in a transforming way in our community.

Join us this Saturday, May 16, at 9am for a day of community work on our grounds followed by a 12:30 lunch.

Our building and grounds are used throughout the week by a variety of groups & the mission of our community. It is vital that we, as a community and a church, spend some time making sure this space is a welcoming, safe, & inviting place so we can fulfill our mission of being a transforming Force for Good in the World in the Name of Jesus Christ.

In addition to the gift of your time & energy on May 16th, we also need:

Financial gifts to support the projects listed above. Make any donations to the church & mention that you are contributing to maintenance of the grounds or the May 16^th Work Day.

We will be having our annual Passover Seder Friday, April 17 at promptly 7pm (arrive early) in the Lower Level.

Here are the highlights from below:

bring a love offering for the Seder Leaders

If you’ve not had the opportunity to be a part of a Seder before, I highly recommend it! It is the feast during which the Last Supper/First Eucharist occurred and is incredibly powerful. Read more about it on Wikipedia.

We have a couple of exceptional Seder leaders this year, so it will be more authentic and meaningful than ever (in addition to you avoiding hearing me attempt to speak Hebrew).

Plan to arrive early if possible as it takes a while and we will be trying to get started promptly at 7pm.

As it is quite an elaborate meal, we will be needing everyone’s help in preparing the dishes. I will take care of the meat, drinks, and items for the ceremonial plates. Please bring a side that DOES NOT contain pork, leaven/yeast products, or dairy products. Suggestions include: glazed carrots, green beans, fresh fruits of any kind, Matzah Ball soup, sponge cake, macaroons, Passover cookies, or anything that DOES NOT contain pork, leaven/yeast products, or dairy products. I have a book a recipes I’d love to share with you.

Please bring $5 or so to defray the cost of food and a love offering for the Seder Leaders who are driving quite a way to serve us.

People from Fairlington Presbyterian morning worship community, Holy Grounds, Fairlington United Methodist, and Common Table have collaborated to create the Stations of the Cross in mixed media. The object of the Stations is to help the faithful to make a spiritual pilgrimage of prayer, through meditating upon the chief scenes of Christ’s sufferings and death. You’re invited to experience the stations which will be setup in the Lower Level of 3846 King St, Alexandria during Holy Week:

Alden will be sharing about the work of Polaris Project and the problem of human trafficking not only in the United States, but specifically the DC area this Sunday April 5 at 9:30am in the Cowsert parlor.

Sitting Vigil Starting Good Friday

How did people feel? I mean, this person who did incredible things and who you thought was the messiah is now dead. You’re simultaneously mourning the loss of your friend and shell-shocked because so much that you thought was true is no longer.

A few weeks ago, Kim and I talked about trying to embody this time as a community. We would actually come together as a community for a wake, sitting shiva for Jesus together from Friday night through Sunday morning-we would eat together, stay together in the lower level on the couches and air mattresses, we would all bring food (preferably casseroles and cook and eat it together like people do during a wake. The whole thing would play out in three acts:

The road to the cross
- Contemplation on the stations of the cross.
- Good Friday worship.
The Wake
- Seeking to place ourselves in the place of the disciples-not knowing what happens on Sunday morning.
- Celebration of the life of Jesus-lots of reading the gospels together (pre-resurrection of course) and also sharing how Jesus has personally been a part of our lives.
- Modeling mourning–it gives us a chance to practice how to mourn together as a community.
The Resurrection
- Sunrise worship together (perhaps we even embody the story of the women finding the tomb some way)
- Feastmeal together on Sunday (location TBD)

Sunday Dinner?

Ok, since I’m gonna be responsible for coming up with a more concrete plan for Sunday dinners together at Holy Grounds, there are a few things I need to know:

1) Food restrictions? Preferences? I know we have some vegetarians, and I’m going to try and keep things healthy and as fresh as possible, but are there other things you’d like to see? Things you positively can’t eat? Food allergies? Feel free to send me any favorite foods, and I’ll see what I can do to hook you up.

2) How often do we want to do this? Once a month? Every other week? When Lisa has her act together? Once we figure out what we want to do, I’ll post here on Thursdays with anticipated menu, then I’ll be looking for RSVPs so I can get a rough estimate. I want to ensure we have plenty of food without being wasteful.

3) We’re looking at keeping costs low – just a few dollars a person, but asking for a suggested donation of $5 to help cover meal costs and have some left over to fund some sort of food mission. Does this seem reasonable?

4) Should I plan to do special event-ish dinners on occasion? Like for given holidays and such? If so, should we anticipate a higher ($10) cost per person? There would be copious notice and announcements.

5) I am gonna need help with getting groceries and making preparations. I would like to eventually move to a system where we have one person doing meal planning (with input, of course) but a team of people that rotate cooking duties. This will help ease the pressure on any one person and will make it a lot easier to have dinner every single week.

Stations of the Cross

We will be setting up the Stations of the Cross Sunday night. Holy Week we want to make them available to people throughout the community to spend time walking through.

My dad is out of surgery and in – intensive care. he will be in IC until wed or thursday then they will move him out for 4 more days in the hospital. Society of St. Andrew Celebration and Potato Drop Saturday, March 28

To celebrate the work of the Society of St. Andrew ministries and to raise awareness about hunger, FUMC is hosting a special celebration event and Potato Drop on Saturday, March 28 at 1:00 pm in the fellowship hall. The Potato Drop will begin at 2:00 pm. The celebration will feature a presentation on the Society of St Andrew end-hunger ministries, remarks by Mike Waldmann, Executive Director of the Society of St. Andrew, and reflections by Fairlington members about their involvement in Fairlington’s hunger ministries. The Potato Drop will take place in the large parking lot immediately following the presentations. Come help unload a truck load of potatoes that will be delivered to food banks and shelters to the area. This is a family-friendly event with activities planned for small children. Friday Night Movie Outing – NOW AT 7PM

Let’s all go out to the movies this Friday Night and see “The Reader”! It’s playing in Shirlington at the AMC Theater and starts at 7:15. And for those that can make it, how about dinner; 6:00 at the Thai restaurant. If you can make it to dinner, I’ll need a head count by 3:00 Friday; so I can make reservation. Justice to Others (A Day of Service for Lent)

So we have our time and space secured for the service project. It will be next Sunday, March 29 at Carpenter’s Shelter: 930 N Henry St, Alexandria, VA 22314

We will be serving breakfast around 8 AM, so we will need to get there rather early. We’re thinking waffles, eggs, bacon or sausage, and the regular coffee/tea/juice deal. I think if we secure the supplies on Saturday and got to the kitchen between 6:00-6:30 AM on Sunday, we should be able to whip up a breakfast worth noting.

Sunday Morning Conversation about Holy Grounds

The morning worship community has been having a series of Lenten conversations before worship each week. Previous ones have included Jan’s Sabbatical, Membership, and the Role of Pastors. We’ll be having a discussion on human trafficking in the U.S. in a couple of weeks.

This week we’re having a discussion about Holy Grounds. I’ll be trying to help people understand how we function as a community and who we are.

Stabat Mater is a thirteenth century Roman Catholic hymn that meditates on the suffering of Mary during the crucifixion. Here is a youtube video with the hymn beautifully sung.

Another Opportunity to Support the Stikkers

You once again wonderful opportunity to spend time with Dave Stikkers at his residence – Sunrise on Duke Street. His stay there has been extended through March 15 and we are againing looking for people to hang out with Dave.

As most of you know, Dave Stikkers is a 41 year old leader in our congregation with frontal lobe dementia. This transition has not been easy as the staff at Sunrise cannot provide 24-hour minute to minute oversight.

If you would like to spend An Evening with Dave for a 3PM-7PM or a 7PM-7AM shift sometime over the next two weeks, please contact Natalie at office@fpcusa.org.

The overnight shift involves simply sleeping in the recliner in Dave’s room and spending time with him if he awakens. The 3PM-7PM shift involves just hanging out and having dinner with him if you wish. There is no physical or medical care required at all. No administration of medication, etc. Just stay with him and make sure he isn’t disturbing the other residents.

It is a blessing and a pleasure to be able to share this time with Dave. And it will give Dave’s family and the compassionate Sunrise staff some peace of mind.

Sunday Night Details

This Sunday night we’ll be focusing on contemplative prayer and listening to God. One of the stations will be using paint, glue, and articles/images depicting suffering, sadness, and pain to create an image of Christ on one of the canvasses we have. I’m trusting that we have enough artistic people that something cool will come out of the materials, but I’m in need of more articles/images. If you can bring news magazines and newspapers on Sunday night it would be incredibly helpful. Let me know so I can figure out how much I need to chase up myself.

Also, Sunday night we’ll have a planning dinner after worship (since it will be a contemplative worship time, we will get out earlier than we have the last few weeks). In the midst of all our planning for lent, we’ll need to layout a skeleton for the time after Lent as well.

Some agenda pieces:

Movie Series on Fridays
The last Sunday we are planning the Stations of the Cross (Karen Vroom is coordinating this).
Erin has planned some other events to express love of self (fasting), love of God (praying), and love of other (serving).
Kim and I have spoken about our overnight plan before Easter morning (we’re looking at expanding it and we’ll share details of what this could look like).

Talking with everyone, there seems to be a ton of excitement about our plans for lent. It’s going to be great!!!

Prayer and Fasting for Lent

Hi all:
Something we mentioned a few weeks ago in our Lent discussion was the idea of taking a couple days outside of HG to celebrate the three original intentions of Lent: Justice to God, Justice to Self, and Justice to Others.

I have thought it through and unless there are big conflicts/better suggestions, here’s my proposal. Rachel Olsem has offered her house (slash Margie’s house) in Old Town as a place for us to meet. For those who wish to partake in this event in any part, this is the plan:

For Justice to Self (we will celebrate this through group fasting) and Justice to God (we will celebrate this through prayer):

Fast from Wednesday March 4 at sundown to Thursday March 5 at sundown. Meet at Rachel’s house Thursday night (120 S Fayette Street in Old Town, Alexandria), we’ll say 7:00 PM, for prayer and a meal. How about we all bring one item potluck style?

Fasting can be what you feel is best for you, whether it’s the whole 24 hours or just part of the day. It’s a time for you to recognize the sacrifice God made on your behalf and be grateful for the coming resurrection. And really, whatever else it means to you. We will meet up to thank God and share what we’ve thought about or experienced throughout the day. I encourage you to pray throughout your day of fasting as well. I have had some really great experiences with God while fasting because you’re sort of humbled by your hunger. He’s revealed a lot to me in these times.

As for Justice to Others, stay tuned. I am working on an idea for some type of community service project. It will most likely be a half day or so on a weekend, but I will let you know for sure soon. Thanks! I hope this is something we can share together. I think it will be a special time

Chaplain Nathan Solomon (who is leading the Problem of Evil class Sunday mornings and who is also just generally amazing) will be preaching.

Canvases & Kicking off Lent

At the end of December we bought a lot of great canvasses that were on significant discount. The main problem is that we bought more than we need and we are needing to figure out which ones to return in the next week or so. Would anyone with artistic vision like to help do this?

Also, Sunday March 1st we will be having a contemplative worship time for the Holy Grounds gathering. The center of this time is to be the creation of a collage of Christ made out of paint, glue, and newspaper/magazine articles depicting suffering. Does anyone have a artistic vision for how this would actually work?

Building up the Church: Exploration of New Monasticism

This Saturday (the 21st) there is a great event happening in DC!

Monasticism has always helped the church remember who she is. This event is designed to help local churches learn about what new monasticism is and what it means for the church. Come and explore five practices that are emerging from new monastic communities: reading Scripture as the story of God’ people, relocation to abandoned places, economic sharing, gospel peacemaking, and cultivating a culture of grace and truth. This is a single day event, hosted by the Servant Leadership School (1640 Columbia Road NW, Washington DC).

On Sunday, February 22nd, we will be helping with a concert in the Lower Level instead of our normal Holy Grounds Worship Gathering. We’ll need EVERYONE’s help welcoming the youth from around the region and managing the night’s festivities.

Here’s the plan:

Please come for any piece that you can. A couple of youth from Fairlington United Methodist will actually be opening for Heath which I’m really excited about. It should be a wonderful opportunity to love our neighbors well, not to mention a lot of fun (as those who came to the last concert can attest).

Italian Restaurant Night

Youth from Fairlington United Methodist are doing an Italian Restaurant Night fundraiser Saturday Feb. 7th, from 5-8 in the Fellowship Hall of Fairlington United Methodist (3900 King St).

A group of us are going around 7 and will sit together. The youth are setting up an Italian Restaurant (usually called CafeAmore but it might change.) It is the biggest fundraiser for the youth all year and goes to support all of the youth activities. Dinner is $8 per person. For the first time in its history, the food will be made from SCRATCH! At least the three different pasta sauces will be: marinara, meat and alfredo.

Also the youth will provide entertainment…and I heard rumors that Dan and Rachel are performing a duet.

You don’t need a reservation, but if you have an idea about how many people are coming let Ashley know so she can give them a heads up. Either that or we can drive them crazy just like we do every other restaurant we enter…

Community Supported Agriculture

Fairlington Presbyterian partners with a local farmer so that we can make great locally grown produce available to people in our community. Each Thursday a local farmer delivers shares of produce that can be picked up in the lobby at 3846 King St, Alexandria, VA.

Community Supported Agriculture establishes a meaningful bond of community between the food on our table and the farmer who grows it. Local shareholders support the farm directly by contributing a small sum and then they get a portion of farm-fresh harvest every week!

The cost for the Summer will be $440 for 18 weeks of vegetables. Learn more of what’s included on the Graceland Farm website.

We’ll be gathering Sunday night with our friends from Fairlington United Methodist for a Superbowl Party in the Lower Level at 6pm after worship on Sunday night (it’s beginning at 4:30pm). I’ll make sure that we have hotdogs and hamburgers for all (veggie burgers as well). Please bring game/party related food and drinks (no alcohol). It should be a great evening starting with sending Margie off well and ending with a great party!

Help Needed on Saturday January 17

Hello Holy Grounds community! My family is going through a sort of crisis right now and so I am asking for help. We are trying to empty out a large building that my grandparents used to own and the task is too overwhelming for just me and my parents. I would like organize a sort of work day for this Saturday afternoon the 17th. Any help for what ever length of time would be not only physically but emotionally helpful. Here are the details:

What: a workday to help out my family
When: Saturday, Jan. 17 at 1-3pm
Where: 717 N. St. Asaph St. in Old Town Alexandria
Things to be done: *Hauling trash to the dumpster *Take remaining stuff to Salvation Army or other donation site *Ideas for unsold organs and other large items

Also, Matt thought I should mention that I do have about 40 pianos and organs that did not sell in the auction we held last weekend. If you are interested in purchasing one for cheap, let me know before tomorrow at noon to set up an appointment for bidding on one. (You can probably get one for $75-$300).
