Who can do Saturday the 11th, from 10 to 2?

I'm hoping for a significantly higher turnout than on a weeknight! ;)

Hello, everyone,

Thanks, Jan. That sounds great. Sadly, though, Jonathan & I will not be able to join you as it is his birthday and we have dinner plans to celebrate. Enjoy the feast, though.

I wanted to let everyone know that John Perkins is speaking this Sunday at a church my friend started recently in DC. It is a small, relaxed, welcoming community, which meets at a charter school-- wear jeans, drink coffee, and maybe even worship a little :-). This is a great opportunity-- please consider going. Check it out at www.districtchurch.org. It begins at 10:30am and will probably go until 11:45 or 12ish. I can't make it-- so go (that I might live vicariously through you!).

Take care and have a nice weekend. Please pray for my job search, too, if you think of it. Thanks.

Wish I could be there - I won't be able to be there tomorrow night. And this is important. Holy Grounds has got to keep its dynamic quality and that depends on continuous flexibility and openness and continuity - a worthy challenge. And we must continue to draw in newcomers and keep in touch with those who disappear! Nancy

Hey Jon, I think myself (Sarah) and the Wismers will meet you there! Give one of us a call when you get to Old Town. I'm guessing the bag pipes lead the parade so we'd get to see them no matter where we stand?

It's true that this will feed your soul. My husband Dave volunteered for the furniture pickups once or twice when he was still relatively well, and he lived off that experience for a long time.

BTW, if any of you is comfortable driving one of these pretty-big panel trucks such as ALIVE uses, and you are free Tuesday morning 2/2, I would love to have your skilled company on a computer pickup run for Computer CORE. I'm scheduled to borrow ALIVE's truck to get 70 CPUs from Chevy Chase, MD, and would like very much to return the truck in same condition as borrowed.

I would like very much for us to gather on the 27th. No particular suggestion about what to do - but maybe we can have a prayer sharing time, maybe with a focus on the upcoming year in our faith journey.. Or anything!!!

The White Elephant Gift exchange is the best social activity for gift giving in large groups.
We hope that you have a great party! We do an online version of the party because we have family all over the US.
It is called AlbinoPhant, and it is alot of fun!

I'm interested, but I can't do the 16th. I'm supposed to lead HG on January 3, but maybe we could either move our program (making HG New Year's resolutions) for the evening to an earlier time frame or shift to another week?

Sorry ladies Tuesdays in Alexandria is just not gonna work for me... When I get off work in Falls church I usually wait around til the hubby is done, then pick him up in Tysons. Even though I technically could make the dinner it's just a lot of driving around :( Keep me posted though!

Hello Mr. Siegrist:

I attended your church's Bible study last nigh with Pastor Jan. A good experience. I will try to make the conversation series this weekend and was sorry to miss it last weekend. I see that you are someone who likes to purchase learning material from the Teaching Company. :) I also have Dr. Schumacher's DVD set on Quantum Physics but I have yet to look at it. Indeed a fascinating subject and one with many implications concerning the nature of reality.
Personally as a scientist, I try to keep a very open mind about things. I have come to see that for many people, truth is subjective as Soren Kierkegaard tells us. This is not to say that religious revelation as an ultimate truth is to be dismissed. For me this means that there is often a difference between scientific facts and personal beliefs. For example, quantum mechanics tells us that the world is probabilistic in nature. That is just how the theory is formulated. What a person 'believes' about how the world really is ontologically is another matter. I have met more scientists who simply try to keep those two things separate.
I thank you for your comments and insights. I think confronting these issues, which are by nature very difficult, speaks well to your church community.

Matt, you beat me to the punch. I was on GChat with Joanna last night having a similar conversation. Every little bit helps. Think of it this way: if the 12 people at burgers last night each gave $25 to Joanna, she'd have $300. That goes a long way to meeting her monthly expenses and ensuring she can carry on the great work she is doing.

As Matt said, if you'd like to make a contribution and receive a tax credit, please make the check out to FPC and write Joanna's name in the memo line. You can give it to me (or someone who can get it to me). Thanks everyone!

Hi, Bob
I tend to agree very much with the important points thta you raise. (My heads up on 9:30 was more for the gentleman from Alexandria, although Matt has been known to work wonders with IT conferencing!)

Last class I introduced quantum entanglement as an example of what physics doesn't understand, and agree that dark matter/energy are very appropriate additons to that list. Next week I'm planning to discuss where we are on matter, and suggest that it's not so firm a foundation for materialsists to attack spirituality, as it were. I don't plan to get into zero-point energy and the quantum vacuum very much, but it may well come up. Fascinating topic well shrouded in limited understanding.
One of my concerns is that science is advancing, but a number of scientists tend to be fairly dismissive of religious belief. I think a number of recent discoveries tend to support religious belief, and want believers to be aware, and use it to advance their own spiritual development.

Sorry i cannot make the discussion as I am in Oregon. I believe that the implications of the new physics on theology is just starting. With dark energy and dark matter, multidimensional realities, strings that are vibrations that underpin what we call matter, and the coming and going of matter in vacuums in space, etc. all point to a vast misunderstanding of what we have been calling reality. Just as Einstein changed how we see reality and led to a vast changing of our perception of time and space, the new physics will usher in a change in how we understand the influences of the mysteries of the universe and how things are just not always what they seem. Intuition, spirit, miracles, group dynamics, the collective unconscious, and even God's self are being re-understood in light of this new physical consciousness of reality. Exciting times to be alive...but very challenging to traditional understandings of theology as well. have fun in the class

Hi, Bob
I'm the one leading the conversation. I liked Paul Davies' God and the New Physics when it came out, but I am more basing background of my talks on Davies' more recent work, Cosmic Jackpot. I also have been listening to lectures by a Kenyon physics professor on quantium mechanics. The theology is mostly what I've picked up along the way, but I really like Why there almost Certainly is a God (an answer to Dawkins), I believe by Ward, who I think is just superb. I also like his previous work, God: a Guide for the Perplexed. Next but certainly not least, the Anthropic Principle discussion follows John Polkinghome (sp?), an Anglican priest and physics scholar. He has a series of papers on the Faraday page website on this general topic that are outstanding in this field.

I’m the one leading the conversation. I liked Paul Davies’ God and the New Physics when it came out, but I am more basing background of my talks on Davies’ more recent work, Cosmic Jackpot. I also have been listening to lectures by a Kenyon physics professor on quantium mechanics.
Matt,
Who is leading this discussion and are they basing it just on the 1984 book or is it updated with new info from Physics. I am interested in this topic but live on the west coast.

I am a young man living in the Alexandria area and am interested in hearing your lecture. Could you please let me know specifically where the lecture is being held and if newcomers who are not affiliated with your church are allowed. I am a physicist and am interested in the topics stated.

Thank you for your time.

Sorry that I'm late to respond -- still catching up after being out of town for a few days!

I'm also happy to host. I do try to keep Wednesday as "date night" with the husband (it's his night off), but I'm generally pretty flexible for scheduling these on weeknights. We live just a few minutes south of Old Town near the Telegraph Road interchange.

I think meeting 1-2 times per month is reasonable, and I think the direction Karen and Jen are suggesting is a good one -- let's get our gatherings started and see where we end up as time goes on.

I'm looking forward to our fellowship time!

I'd be happy to host if Old Town is a good, central location. At this point, Wednesday or Thursday would work well for me. I also second Jen's thoughts in that it would be nice if it were a girls only group. We get plenty of time with the boys :)

I would love to spend more time with the wonderful women of holy grounds (and friends once or twice removed ). I like the idea of twice a month and agree will probably have the first few more about "scratching below the surface" and seeing where the Spirit moves up. I'm always up for hosting as long as there are travelers willing to brave the traffic to get here. I have no problem getting to know the gentleman of holy grounds either but would like to have a girls only time maybe once a month. No offense boys, but you probably wouldn't want to hear the conversation anyways.. ;o)

I love to move furniture AND paint! I'll be there! Oh wait.... bummer.

But just to let everyone know, I've made it safe to Dubai (Kabul tomorrow), thanks for being awesome and keeping my wife company!

OK I am so behind in the world of church. I didn't realize this meeting would be tomorrow, and I already made plans! Whatever. Here are my two cents to the discussion:

1. I think maybe a monthly potluck could be a good idea. I really like to cook, as you may know.
2. As a potential point of focus, I think it follows from Lent (looking inward) to look outward, i.e. think on what our "community" means and how to serve it. What does church mean in an era where we commute to worship and use twitter to communicate? What is our relation to the world and our much poorer brothers and sisters, and how can we build on that relationship? I think if we all pitch topics like these, each of them could be a topic of discussion each week and we could have some great content for worship.
3. I want to use the meeting as a time to pitch once again the idea of a book/bible study jointly with the morning congregation. I think some of the men are doing a potential book study but I personally need some accountability when it comes to getting into the Word. I don't care if it's a handful of girls only or coed, although I think the girls only thing would be kind of neat. I also thought it would be a good way to start bridging the gap between the morning and evening worship. I know Lakeisha is very interested. BTW is she coming to this meeting? please make sure she is invited!
4. Finally, please summarize the highlights of the meeting in some way for those of us who won't be there!

Corey - if you'd like to help lead worship, that would be great. Do you like to do this kind or thing (up front) or do you prefer set up/behind the scenes?

Everybody - Please join me and others THIS THURSDAY, APRIL 30th up in my study (main floor of building in education wing)at 6:30 to talk about ideas for celebrating THE COMING OF THE SPIRIT.

We really need people who: love creative worship, are pumped about worshipping outside.

So, I thought maybe we should have a running e-dialogue or planning dinner about the summer season. My immediate thought after Lent is that it's time to look outward now instead of inward, to think about mission and outreach. I think Kim's discussion on "evangelism" is a great segue into this realm. We are a commuter church, so I have no idea who our neighbor would be. Whom should we love?

One way to explore what this means is to study Acts. I've seen our old church do this after easter and it seems to flow naturally, and to fit with the above. What do you all think?

I'm pretty much on the same page. I could never quite understand how the evangelical doctrine of atonement worked with 1) God as Love and 2) the orthodox understanding of the Trinity. What Tony has articulated does not reject the cross or Christ's sacrifice. In fact, it deeply affirms it.

Hi Lisa,
I'm not sure, but I think we should prepare for about 40-50 people. While a lot of people don't hang out at the center, I know Sunday morning is a popular time for a meal, so I'm hopefully overestimating!

Thanks for your comments! I talked with Matt about doing the homeless shelter breakfast on March 29. We could combine this with Karen's idea. Whatever you would spend on say a cup of coffee at Starbucks or on a nice lunch or something, you can give to buy groceries for the homeless shelter. We will use some to cook for them, and they can have the rest for the next meals!

I will do a separate posting on this since I'm not sure follow up comments are emailed, but thanks so much!

Oh and to Jen's comment, we will definitely be praying before we eat...just to taunt people like Karen a little longer :)

hey Erin, that is great. I am so proud (as in, pleased) of our community really rallying around this season of Lent. I will think about participating although (or because) it will be difficult because I spend an inordinate amount of each day thinking about or doing something related to food.

Regarding the Justice to Others, tell me what you think about this: I am personally becoming more convicted about my consumeristic tendencies and probably others feel the same. We could make a conscious effort to take money we would normally spend on X (whatever that is for the person) and contribute it to some agreed-upon cause. I am generally skeptical of one-time service projects because often they give the volunteer a sense of satisfaction that I think is more than the amount contributed in that one instance. Hopefully we will have a project that gets around this.

To answer your question, no... BUT I think this would be an awesome way to get folks to think & discuss what Stations of the Cross might look like for them. Matt, can you discuss w/ folks at Convergence to see if they have any interest in working on Stations with us?

Love this but have wondered what the deal is with Veronica. Any former Catholics or lovers of this story to shed a little light?

Our main relationship is just that we are a drop-off point. A few of us have had a share before and it's been a really good experience.

I'm in -- I think the 15th is the only Sunday in February I wouldn't be able to help. Great suggestion!

I've gotten a lot of e-mails from people saying that they are on board.

To do breakfast we don't have to do the volunteer training.

We would need to provide (we can cook it and bring it or ccok it there) and serve breakfast for about 75. We'd need a minimum of 4 and maximum of 10 people whenever we serve.

I'm thinking about going ahead and scheduling a time in February and then, after doing it once, deciding if it is something we want to continue to do and how many times a month.

Thoughts?

Matt - I'm interested; though getting to thier orientation maybe be a little tricky, based on the times they offer it. Any how lets keep chatting this one up, I like the idea of volunteering in my own neighborhood.

Hey Matt - I might be interested if there were enough people to cover if someone had to miss a month. Also, it looks like we'd have to go through volunteer orientation and the next evening one isn't until March. Regardless I may look into doing the front desk thing for them once in awhile.

What a church! If it is true that its mission is: "A commitment to serious, inward contemplation as well as ambitious social justice work," then we at HG are focusing on one and not both (although I like contemplation very much!). My first response is, why aren't we doing stuff like that! Still, I'm not worried, the opportunity will eventually come. We shouldn't rush into anything just for the sake of doing something.
